Most diets or fat loss plans focus on what and how much you eat. While that’s important, we often overlook the how - how we actually eat.

If you’re struggling to get results, feel frustrated by diet hacks, or constantly worry about what’s “right” or “wrong” (like “Are potatoes bad?”), or if you’ve tried intermittent fasting or low-carb but still wonder when will it work? - mindful eating might be the missing piece in your journey.

So, What Is Mindful Eating?

Mindful eating is all about slowing down, eliminating distractions, and fully engaging with your food - the feel, the flavor, and the experience of eating. It means not rushing, grabbing meals on the go, standing in the kitchen, watching TV, or scrolling your phone. It’s about pausing, sitting down, and appreciating the moment.

Why Practice Mindful Eating?

“Slow eating may be the single most powerful habit for driving major transformation.” - Precision Nutrition

That’s why I encourage all my clients to adopt mindful eating habits. Here’s how it can help you:

1. You’ll Eat Less - Without Feeling Restricted

Eating quickly can lead to overeating before your body has time to register fullness. Slowing down helps you feel satisfied with less food and allows your natural hunger and fullness signals to kick in.

2. You’ll Look and Feel Better

Chewing thoroughly is the first stage of digestion. If you rush your meals and don’t chew properly, your stomach has to work harder, which can lead to bloating and digestive issues. Eating slowly also improves nutrient absorption, which supports better energy, health, and appearance.

3. You’ll Reconnect with Your Hunger and Fullness Cues

Many people lose touch with these signals through restrictive dieting. Mindful eating helps you listen to your body and give it energy when it truly needs it - without guilt or second-guessing.

4. You’ll Regain Control of Your Progress

Mindful eating can break the cycle of self-sabotage. It teaches you to pause and respond intentionally, rather than react impulsively. Over time, it helps normalise your eating habits and makes progress feel more sustainable.

5. It’s a Simple Tool You Can Use Anytime

You don’t need to follow a rigid diet that stops you from enjoying life. Wherever you are, you can practice mindful eating. By consciously slowing down, your relationship with food improves - and so does your overall lifestyle.

How to Practice Mindful Eating

This tool is simple - but not always easy. It takes conscious effort and consistency. Start small and it will get easier over time.

Tips to Practice Mindful Eating:

1. Set the scene: Sit at a table with cutlery and a drink - no TV, no phone, no standing in the kitchen.

2. Pause before eating: Look at your plate and take a few deep breaths to slow down.

3. Take a bite, then pause: Put your knife and fork down between bites while you chew and taste your food.

4. Choose chew-worthy foods: Whole foods take more effort to eat but offer more nutrients and satiety. Plus, they naturally slow you down.

5. Savour every mouthful: Focus on flavor, texture, and the experience. You’ll enjoy your food more - and feel more satisfied.

If you think you don’t have time for this, I challenge you to try it.

Set a timer for 20 minutes and commit that time to your meal. Count your chews. Ask yourself: Do I chew enough before swallowing? Try taking a breath or a sip of water between each bite to slow the pace.

Once you start, you’ll notice the difference - not just in how you feel, but in how others eat too. So many people rush through meals, missing the point: food is meant to nourish our bodies and be enjoyed.
